TOURNAMENT REPORT

Ashis Adhikari of Odisha Won the ‘1st Late Shri Debendra Nath Sarma Memorial All India Open Children Chess Championship 2020’ by scoring 9 points out of 9 rounds. Alekhya Mukhopadhyay of West Bengal secured the 2nd position while Manthan Kashyap Datta of Guwahati bagged the 3rd position.
A total of 9 rounds in swiss league format with blitz time control was played online on the popular online gaming platform chess.com. The tournament was organised in memory of prominent social worker and ex-employee of Reserve Bank of India Sri Debendra Nath Sarma of Guwahati Assam. 

The prize distribution ceremony held on 3rd August 2020 through video conferencing was attended by Mrs Sabitri Devi, wife of Late Shri Debendra Nath Sarma,  Dr Dipali Devi, President Akshayam, Dr Tridib Ranjan Sarma, Vice President of Akshayam, Ratnamala Sarma, Vice President, Akshayam, Rajashree Bhattacharyya, Joint Secretary, Akshayam and Nandan Buragohain, Secretary, Assam Chess Club. 

The tournament was conducted under the supervision of Mr. Biswajit Bharadwaj, the first and only International Arbiter of Assam.
 Earlier the tournament was inagurated on 1st August 2020 by International Master and former coach of India Sri Atanu Lahiri of West Bengal.


Top 12 positions: Ashis Adhikari (champion), Alekhya Mukhopadhyay (2nd), Manthan Kashyap Datta (3rd), Arkya Chatterjee (4th), Shreya Hipparagi (5th), Arjit Prasad (6th), Abdul Kalam A (7th), Rayhan Zaman (8th), Arshiya Das (9th), Yati Agarwal 10th), Uddipan Roy (11th) and Manraj Singh (12th).

A total of 277 players from across the country had registered for this event organised by the leading chess club of the region Assam Chess Club, a unit of Akshayam, an organisation dedicated to the promotion and development of sport, culture and tourism. The top 12 position holders were awarded scholarships worth Rs. 1,50,000/- and merit certificate.
