Shahil wins Gold medal at Asian Youth Under 12 Rapid Chess Championship 2019 at Srilanka

Assam Chess Prodigy Shahil Dey emerged Champion and clinched the Gold Medal in the Under 12 category of Asian Youth Rapid Chess Championship 2019 held at Hotel Citrus, Waskaduwa, Sri Lanka yesterday. He scored 6.5 points out of possible 7 points in 7 rounds played under Rapid time control of 15 minutes with 10 seconds increment from move one.
Shahil is part of the 20 member Indian Contingent that is taking part in the Asian Youth Chess Championship (Rapid, Blitz & Classical event) that is underway at Sri Lanka from 2nd to 9th April 2019.
Shahil who was a trainee of Assam Chess Club is also participating in the classical event of the tournament and seeded 3rd in the starting Rank list.
Shahil is the first and only player from the entire Northeast to win a National Chess Championship in the year 2014 (National Under 7) and in the year 2016 (National Under 9) has recently put up an excellent performance in Vietnam and Sharjah by defeating a number of top rank players and gained 109 ELO Rating points and is on the verge of becoming the highest Rated Junior Chess Player of the entire North east region.
Shahil is currently ranked 6th in India ,10th in Asia and 32nd in the world in the Under 12 Age category.
In the year 2017, Shahil was awarded "NATIONAL CHILD AWARD FOR EXCEPTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT 2017" by the President of India at Rastrapati Bhawan.
Chess has been included in the Asian Games to be held at China in the year 2020 and is also in the process of being included in the 2024 Olympics at Paris and it will be a icing in the cake if Shahil can secure a berth in the Indian team for the Asian games and the Olympics games.
